My MTV

January 26, 2011

Radio. I still listen to it, but mostly online nowadays. Love it because I’ll hear music that I otherwise wouldn’t listen too. So the other day I started reminiscing the 90s when i heard Lynden David Hall’s Sexy Cinderella on my favourite BBC 1xtra.

Remembering those late nights watching MTV Amour. I probably should have been asleep by the time it was on but fell asleep after it instead.

Good old days drowning into the sexy, silky, smooth sounds of those love songs. Amour was one of my favourite shows being a big MTV fan as a teen. After The Lick!

Every Wednesday night, 10p.m. I was glued. The Lick – Trevor Nelson, his voice, the sofa. And the music of course.

That’s what they used to do on MTV, play music videos, lots of them. They still do, don’t they? (on the extra channels I think like MTV2, MTV Dance, MTV Base)

Trevor Nelson, we salute you, then he got rid of the sofa and I started losing interest. I moved to the UK and his British accent wasn’t that special anymore.

I listened to him on the BBC 1xtra Breakfast Show but now he is only one good DJ among many other. Thanks CJ Beatz for bringing back some Old Skool on Sunday.

Amour and The Lick have both had a big impact in defining my taste for music and what I listen to today.

Another video often played on Amour and so great it had to be added to this post.

RIP Lynden David Hall and Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes.

Get Funky UK style

August 31, 2010

This will be completely dedicated to UK Funky House and some of my favourite tunes. Great music to put you in the party mood, fantastic to dance to and to keep you awake whilst driving.

Crazy Cousinz – Bongo Jam

Don’t really know who sings this but it’s remixed by Crazy Cousinz who are big in the UK funky house scene. Her name might be Calista but I’m not sure. Love it and it makes me want to get my bongos out and play them in the morning to wake up the neighbourhood. Not that I have any bongos, but if I did…

Kyla – Do You Mind

It’s sweet and it’s very sexy in an innocent kind of way and it’s so perfect in the club. Very flirty, flirty lyrics and obviously why it’s so great in the club.

Meleka – Go

Another club banger and another Crazy Cousinz production. Complete opposite lyrics to Kyla’s Do You Mind. A little bit harder and not flirty at all. Girl hate on boy story.

Egypt – In the Morning

Absolutely loved this tune when it came out and I still like it but I did not imagine that the girl behind the voice looked the way she does. Her nose is kind of big and that’s what I think about now when I hear the song. I shouldn’t have seen the video.

Done’o and Princess Nyah have also dropped a few hits but there are many one-hit-wonders in this genre such as Gracious K who got clubs to put their hands on their heads and do the Migraine Skank and K.I.G. with Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Great place to listen to Funky House online is BBC Radio 1xtra. Great station to listen to hip hop, r’n’b, dancehall and probably d’n’b if you like that. Often it’s been where I heard many tunes first, depending on the show and the DJ. They also play some old classics so it’s not all new and not always that mainstream.

Bad Boys

August 26, 2009

So I heard it now. Yesterday morning on BBC Radio 1, Chris Moyles’ show.

Alexandra Burke’s new single. Bad Boys with Flo Rida. So what do I think? Not as good as JLS’s Beat Again. I hate that it has to be compared to the boys but it’s hard to avoid it.

I want to be nice about it and say that it will grow on me, it might. Probably not. It sounded like something out of the Eurovision. Too pop, too girlie. Not sexy enough, not sexy at all. The name of the song is Bad Boys, what else would you expect. At least Flo Rida brings some bad boy into it.

Even though it didin’t do it for me and my high expectations, it will get lots of airplay and people will love it.

What I wonder though, do those Radio 1 DJs really like everything they play? Don’t think so. Alexandra was there chatting with Chris and his crew. After they played the song, one of Chris’s friend, pretty sure it was Aled, could have been Dave pointed out that it sounds like she sings ‘spinning marmite’. It really did.

It was funny. The cheesy chorus ‘The bad boys, always catching my eye. The bad boys are always spinning my mind,’ which really sounded like spinning marmite. Anyway, annoying as they can be on that Breakfast show they went on and on and on spinning marmite. Marmite, you either love it or hate it.
