Black Swan

February 26, 2011

Very intense. It’s like sitting on needles. You think you’re going to be able to stand up and then someone pushes you down and you’re on the needles again.

Very intense. You’re holding your breath and you want to take a deep breath but the suspense comes back so quickly you’re holding your breath again.

Very intense. And it’s so beautiful yet so gory.

Black Swan, the one word that describes the film best is intense if you hadn’t noticed yet. Everything about it – the story, the characters, the music…

Not that I know much of the ballet industry but it feels like a realistic view of what it could be like. Very competitive, pressurised, filled with insecurities, which all have its consequences. Eating disorders, mental disorders, OCDs. Still, it may be prejudiced.

Happy I gave it up at the age of seven or was kind of forced due to circumstances but what if?

But, also, probably why I enjoyed watching this film so much. What if?

Natalie Portman was brilliant and if she wins the Oscar, she truly deserves it. So much better than Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine. But there’s a 14-year-old in the run too.

Get Funky UK style

August 31, 2010

This will be completely dedicated to UK Funky House and some of my favourite tunes. Great music to put you in the party mood, fantastic to dance to and to keep you awake whilst driving.

Crazy Cousinz – Bongo Jam

Don’t really know who sings this but it’s remixed by Crazy Cousinz who are big in the UK funky house scene. Her name might be Calista but I’m not sure. Love it and it makes me want to get my bongos out and play them in the morning to wake up the neighbourhood. Not that I have any bongos, but if I did…

Kyla – Do You Mind

It’s sweet and it’s very sexy in an innocent kind of way and it’s so perfect in the club. Very flirty, flirty lyrics and obviously why it’s so great in the club.

Meleka – Go

Another club banger and another Crazy Cousinz production. Complete opposite lyrics to Kyla’s Do You Mind. A little bit harder and not flirty at all. Girl hate on boy story.

Egypt – In the Morning

Absolutely loved this tune when it came out and I still like it but I did not imagine that the girl behind the voice looked the way she does. Her nose is kind of big and that’s what I think about now when I hear the song. I shouldn’t have seen the video.

Done’o and Princess Nyah have also dropped a few hits but there are many one-hit-wonders in this genre such as Gracious K who got clubs to put their hands on their heads and do the Migraine Skank and K.I.G. with Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Great place to listen to Funky House online is BBC Radio 1xtra. Great station to listen to hip hop, r’n’b, dancehall and probably d’n’b if you like that. Often it’s been where I heard many tunes first, depending on the show and the DJ. They also play some old classics so it’s not all new and not always that mainstream.

Rock Chick goes Electro

August 16, 2009

Shakira is back! Her new song She Wolf, big hit. It makes me want to dance.

A bit different to Shakira’s previous sounds. Her vocals are still familiar but the electric notes come as fresh air.

And it comes with a video. The leotard that she’s wearing, fierce. The pop and locking moves, fierce. Not just the boobs, her whole body. Bye bye Fergie. And Beyonce is already practicing.

15 second preview of the video. For the full version, visit Shakira’s MySpace.

The End of an Era

June 25, 2009

He was with us for 50 years, almost 51. The King of Pop. Michael Jackson.

He’s passed away today after suffering a cardiac arrest. I’m still in shock. Not surprised but in absolute shock.

He changed music. The music videos. The dance steps. He’s a legend and there will never be anyone like him.

May he rest in peace.

Added 26 June:

The day after and I’m still in shock. Driving, I listen to the tributes on Radio1 and the only thing they talk about in the news is about Michael Jackson. How great he was. The impact he’s had. The legacy he’s leaving behind. The scandals are also mentioned, the court case, the plastic surgeries, the lightning of the skin, his monkey friend.

Trevor Nelson mentioned Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye, who also died young. Wyclef on Twitter: “RT James Brown Dec 25 Aaliyah Aug 25 Left Eye April 25 Michael Jackson June 25. Two plus Five is Seven,Seven is the num of completion. R I P”

A tribute song has already been made. Better on the Other Side featuring Game, Chris Brown, Diddy, Polow Da Don, Mario Winans, Usher and Boyz II Men, produced by DJ Khalil.

I recently watched Notorious, the film about Notorious BIG, Biggie Smalls, where at the end, real life footage is shown how people are celebrating his music in the streets of Brooklyn. Now, there are people celebrating worldwide. Who hasn’t tried to do a moonwalk?

Watch Michael Jackson as a little boy in this first footage of him performing. The soul in that little body is phenomenal.

Poor little boy, if he only knew what would happen to him. May he be in a better place.

When Love Takes Over

June 7, 2009

Smells like a summer hit. I’m already hearing it about 3, 4 times a day on the radio and still, I’m not bored of it.

Kelly Rowland’s voice is so beautiful in David Guetta’s When Love Takes Over. It’s just a joy to listen to.

Those Radio 1 presenters have been going on and on about the music video, saying you have to see it all the time. Kelly Rowland is absolutely beautiful. They probably got paid to do it because it’s not really that special.

Even the video smells like a summer hit. A sunny day that progresses to a beach party at night. To see the video click here.
